Kansas’ 1-4 Backdoor Set Play

The Kansas Jayhawks are known for their aggressive attacking offensive style. The first play we will analyze is their 1 – 4 backdoor out of their set offense. The main objective is to hit a backdoor wing dive from an interior player at the high post.

Position One

Big players start high at the wing positions and when the ballhandler arrives, they set down picks for the low men. Low men will work around the outside of the picks and free themselves up at the wings – potentially a look for an open three-pointer.

Position Two

Players that set the down screens pop hard to the elbows. The ball handler hits one of them with a quick pass.

Step Three

The big man’s primary look is his wing cutting backside to the hoop. It is important that the players on the other side of the court pop high. This action accomplishes two things:

  1. It provides opportunities for kick outs in case the cut is well-defended.
  2. It freezes the defenders high, opening up the court for the cutters.
