HPU’s Weave High Ball Screen

Today we look at High Point University’s take on the Weave High Ball Screen (HBS). This is a particularly effective screen when run in a tight man to man that does slides around screens, rather than switching. When the downhill attack begins, it ensures that there are multiple options if the attacker is cut off.

Position One

The point guard dribbles toward his chosen wing. He initiates a dribble hand off and sets a hard pick for his wing. Point guard should be aware of match-ups here. He will want to initiate the play AWAY from the wing with the advantage, or the wing with a better driving skill set so that they end up in an attack position.

Position Two

The wing dribbles to the top of the key and initiates the same motion to the opposite wing.

Position Three

As the second wing gets to the top of the key, the backside low man sets a hard back screen that the ball handler can use to his advantage to attack the hoop. Its important to note that this high screen should also roll and seal the defender. And then pop to provide a kick back option in case the ball handler is stopped. The low man who didn’t set the high pick can read the situation and provide a backdoor cut if the ball handlers is stopped.
